DESIGN

The Canon Pixma MP970 is a basic-looking device with a front-yield paper tray for loading empty media as well as catching printouts. The scanner/copier still sits on top of the unit, and a small display can be used to preview print jobs as well as navigate the machine’s menus. The LCD display also makes PC-less operation much easier. The Canon Pixma MP970 also uses Smart LED tanks, which contain lamps that blink to warn users that ink is running low.

SPECIFICATIONS

You’ll create 4″ x 6″ photos with spectacular 9600 x 2400 color dpi1 resolution (max.) in only about 35 seconds.2 The 7-color ink system produces photos that are richer and more life-like than ever before. Scans of photos, negatives and even thick notebooks will yield superb 4800 x 9600 color dpi results, and copies will be more faithful to your originals. The Ethernet interface enables networking, and the large 3.5″ TFT display lets you preview images in high resolution, then print directly from compatible memory cards3 without a computer.

However, the MP970 installation process on a network is not the same as a network-based printer in general. Usually we just plug the printer into the network, and the setup software will automatically find and install the required drivers. In the Pixma MP970, we have to plug in the printer via USB, then in the setup software we select the Ethernet connection, then we can plug in the Ethernet cable. A bit of a hassle, in our opinion. This multifunction also provides a card reader (CF, SD/MMC, MS, MD) as well as a PictBridge-enabled USB port for printing directly from a digital camera or via a Bluetooth adapter (optional). As a complement, the MP970 also includes an infrared receiver for easy printing via mobile phones that only have the IrDa facility. Unfortunately, this connection only accepts JPEG format files.
